The Fifth Graders start the year off by learning about color. They learn about complementary colors. Complementary Colors are across from each other on the color wheel. There are three pairs of colors - blue and orange, yellow and purple and green and red. The students create a complementary color animal by drawing an animal and then dividing the paper into six sections. They use the complementary colors to color the sections in, also use Value - the lights and darks of a color at the same time.
The next project the Fifth Graders work on is Value but unlike the last project we concentrate on Tints and Shades. A tint is a color mixed with white. A shade is a color mixed with black. The students practice mixing tints and shades on a piece of paper using blue, black and white. The students then start with circle of white on a piece of larger paper and slowly add different tints of blue around the circle. When they get to the hue - the true color they then start adding black to the blue to make different shades until they fill the paper. They then add ocean creatures to their project. The students use a principle of design - Movement to make the ocean creatures look as though they are swimming in the water.
We then learn about Pop Art. The students watch a DVD "Who is the Artist: Artists of Pop Art". The DVD discusses three Pop Artists, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Wayne Thiebaud. The students get to know each artists different style of Pop Art and get to guess which one is which. Andy Warhol printed multiple images of artwork. His subject matter included things that were part of American culture at the time - celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis, manufactured goods like Campbell's soup cans or Coca Cola bottles etc. The students then choose an animal as their subject matter. They draw the animal on a piece of small paper and transfer the image to a piece of foam. They print the image four times on different colors of paper using different colors of ink. The students then display all four works on a piece of paper paper.
